Shine works with children and their families to promote active participation, engagement, and occupational success. Occupation based learning allows children to develop the skills necessary to fulfill their roles in the school, home, and community through play! With a focus on occupational participation and engagement, we work to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, visual processing skills, sensory processing skills, cognitive skills, executive functioning, and social skills. Our mission is to promote independence and engagement in everyday routines by addressing each child’s individual needs. Through play and fun, Shine can increase confidence to empower each child with a sense of competence in completing daily activities.
Shine believes each child has a unique personality, requiring a specialized and client centered approach. We emphasize bolstering a child’s self-esteem to help reveal their inner strengths. Our goal is to help each child reach their full potential at home, school and play. While end goals are also important, we believe the journey should be fun, improve quality of life, and increase confidence.
Jodi's Gym is the perfect space to challenge balance, coordination, and strength. It is a safe place to climb, jump, crash, swing, and play! The gym also includes a private room for table top activities, crafts, and tactile sensory exploration.
Jodi's Gym offers various programs for children from 12 months-12 years. Classes include gymnastics, ninja challenge, and music. For more information please visit https://www.jodisgym.com
An initial evaluation will assess a child's difficulties, strengths, and functional skills to assist in the development of a comprehensive treatment plan.
A holistic, client-centered, goals-based intervention plan to reach annual goals for overall success in a child's daily activities in school, home, and the community.
School-based assessments help improve success in the classroom through observation and consultation. We work with parents and teachers on how to best support each child in the classroom setting.
Emily earned her Masters degree in Occupational Therapy from Gwynedd Mercy University and her Bachelors degree in Health Behavior Science with a minor in Health, Physical Activity, and Disability from the University of Delaware. She has experience in a variety of settings including a specialized Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) summer camp, hippotherapy, and art therapy but has spent most of her time in outpatient pediatrics and school-based services. Emily has always been passionate about working with children to improve their confidence and help them become the most successful and functional versions of themselves. She believes the best outcomes come from building a strong relationship with each unique child and maintaining open communication with the parents and caregivers to promote success outside of the gym. As a previous gymnast, Emily believes that movement, just-right challenges, and interaction with different environments/contexts are important for physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Emily values research-based, client-centered interventions which still incorporate fun and play! When she’s not working, she enjoys Crossfit, hiking, crafting, and spending time with her friends, family, and dog.
Primitive reflexes are repetitive, automatic movements that provide the foundation for all motor coordination skills. Infants develop primitive reflexes in utero for birth and early development. Typically, these reflexes integrate in the first year of life. However, if these reflexes don't integrate, both physical and behavioral issues will occur.
These retained primitive reflexes can have long term effects on development even into adulthood. Once your child has been assessed for primitive reflex retention, a certified primitive reflex clinical specialist can initiate therapeutic interventions to integrate primitive reflexes and improve neurological development.
